Open-cast coal mining is never a pretty operation, even when a site is no longer in operation, it’s black treasure all gone. Once abandoned, all that remains is a massive scar in the land and a huge heap of slag, dark testament to our industrial past.
Yet, all is not necessarily lost. As they say, where there is a will (and a certain creative genius), there is a way. With the far-sighted determination of the land’s owner, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the creative vision of the world renowned artist Charles Jencks, Crawick rose like the phoenix from the ashes to become a beautiful land sculpture, where Nature is once again thriving. Inspired by the wonders of the Cosmos and with rather more than just a cursery nod to the awe-inspiring stone monuments of prehistory, the Multiverse has transformed the once desolate site into a place of beauty.
We’ve wanted to visit the site for some time and the 2024 Music of the Multiverse Festival finally gave us the impetus to fulfil this wish. The wonderful setting and the natural amphitheatre that has been created at the base of the ‘heap’ make for an excellent music venue. Great music and and a glorious summer’s day made for a fabulous first visit. I hope you enjoy these photos from the day.
